That depends if you have open or closed chamber 383 heads..
I run a 77 400 with stock pistons and slightly ported 452 (400) heads and I run 12's in a 3800 lbs car... The 452's flow as good as the old 915 or 906 heads....
Also remember that the 400 heads have hardened seats for unleaded fuel.. the 383 heads will not... you will have to have them updated to make them compatible with unleaded fuel..
